7&8 Market

How can design help promote the inclusion and sale of healthy food options in local neighborhood markets?

As the Healthy Neighborhood Market Network at the LA Food Policy Council has been working to bring more healthy food options to underserved neighborhoods of Los Angeles, LA-Más has had the opportunity to work with local neighborhood market owners to highlight these new healthy food options with fresh store redesigns.

Juan has owned and operated 7&8 Market with his family for the past 18 years and recently has worked with LA Food Policy Council to bring more fresh produce and healthy options to his store near MacArthur Park.

Given the opportunity to redesign the interior of his store, Juan was excited to work with LA-Más to develop solutions for storage and to improve the overall layout. To address significant storage needs, LA-Más worked with Juan to create a new dedicated storage area, a custom designed counter with lots of integrated shelving, and new shelves to help better utilize the existing space. The store also gained large chalkboard signs to communicate inventory and pricing, along with a new logo and branding to help direct customers to the store.

The new open layout allows for a dedicated area for fresh produce and grocery items right at the front of the store while celebrating the personal counter service that Juan’s long time customers have enjoyed for years.
