On Avalon Trash Bins
How can infrastructure be community-inspired, well-designed, and functional?
Trash bins are seldom thought of when describing corridor, yet trash is often cited as adding to blight and degradation of street. From community feedback, we heard many times over that Avalon Boulevard was in need of more trash receptacles to help maintain a cleaner street. Council District 15 invested in over a dozen Big Belly solar compactors and recycling bins for the corridor. We used this as an opportunity to celebrate Wilmington’s artistic community by holding an art workshop and design contest. The winning designs of the competition were used to inspire the graphics featured on the Big Belly bins, which feature icons such as the Port of L.A. and The Don Hotel.
