Sam's Corner Store
How can design help promote the inclusion and sale of healthy food options in local neighborhood markets?
As the Healthy Neighborhood Market Network at the LA Food Policy Council has been working to bring more healthy food options to underserved neighborhoods of Los Angeles, LA-Más has had the opportunity to work with local neighborhood market owners to highlight these new healthy food options with fresh store redesigns.
Owned by his parents since 1982, Sam’s Corner Store is now owned and operated by Andy near MacArthur Park. After taking over ownership in 2012, Andy has shown a commitment to bringing more fresh produce and healthy options to this heavily trafficked location.
With the opportunity to do some larger store improvements, Andy was excited to work with LA-Más to have the look of his store help communicate the mission of increased fresh and healthy options. With new exterior paint, bilingual signage, a brand new check out counter, and “fresh” icons both inside and out, customers are greeted with a new healthy forward branding at this long running neighborhood establishment.
